I'm starting to hate those idiotic phrases. On the one hand, they are true, but on the other hand, the whole purpose of competing is to win. You don't go into it, not trying to win. You go into it with the purpose of winning but understanding that others are trying to win too, and you may lose. The key to it is being able to lose gracefully. That's the part many are unable to do, so they use phrases like these to hide their feelings of disappointment and sadness.
